Manifesto For the Noosphere: The Next Stage In The Evolution Of Human Consciousness

Rating:You know a book is good when the author’s introduction pulls on your heart strings right away. Like many of us, José Argüelles speaks of the awkwardness of being in such a beautiful world that seems to have a dark spell cast upon it - the bizarre reality of duality in it’s prime. He paints his visions of a pristine planet being ripped apart and raped by mankind’s disconnection with the Earth and her natural cycles. In what seems to be a tone of invocation, he speaks as the Earth, “The clever ones mapped me and made globes to resemble me; they chose to live by their own time and ceased to live by great cycles that govern the universal order. For the sake of money, they divided their time and they divided the Earth; They no longer considered themselves part of the Earth; instead, I, the Earth, became their slave. They created all manner of machines, and for their machines they needed everything they could take from the Earth. They tore down my forests, ripped open my mountains, and dug deep in the land and the sea for fuel to run the machines.” Then he continues in an almost prophetic tone of warning, “And I saw that among the clever ones there were dreamers, prophets and messengers, poets and artists who saw another world, who warned you, who tried to tame your greed and your lusts for the benefit of your soul.”
Argüelles maintains that the Earth is more than a bunch of land masses, bodies of water, flora and fauna, as you will discover in this book. But rather, the Earth is a work of art with an evolving soul that we are all connected to. Somewhere between the lines of the Aboriginal “Dreamtime” and the Jungian Collective Unconscious lies the concept of the Noosphere. The Noosphere, from the Greek word “nous” meaning “mind”, is a field system of psychic-mental energy surrounding the Earth that directly effects the evolution of mankind’s consciousness in a synchronistic symbiosis. Argüelles speculates that the Noosphere was realized when mankind received it’s first glimpses of the planet as a whole in the 1960s and will be consciously activated on December 21, 2012.
He explains the new Noosphere paradigm and draws parallels and insight from scientists, philosophers, mystics and his own experience. It is his experience and vision which compels me the most in this book. The book is almost his last wish for humanity and the Earth, it is his nudging of us to do better, and be more - a manifesto indeed! His dream for our future is stated quite eloquently when he says “The shift into a noospheric state of being represents a collective focusing and unification of human consciousness hitherto undreamed. Synchronizing ourselves in ever-greater circles of harmony, we will become a new species - Homonoosphericus. Creative peace will be inherent in our new self-preception and developing awareness of the universe in which we find ourselves. The problems we face today will dissolve in the light of a consciousness operating according to a unified planetary program. Spiritually interconnected and acting with a truly planetary and galactic perspective, we will dance to the greater rhythms of the cosmic Supermind. Art will become our way of life.”
As artistic and beautifully crafted Argüelles’ vision is, the book is aimed at the more intelligent reader, laying out complex mechanics of the noosphere and the research that supports his hypothesis. The book is full of beautiful diagrams (ha, I know, but it’s true, the diagrams are really well done) to help illustrate his rather detailed model of the noosphere’s relationship to ourselves and the Earth. Manifesto of the Noosphere is the crowning jewel in the work and life of José Argüelles and a book I have a feeling will only grow more popular as one of those “important books” in the movement of new consciousness as more people discover it and realize the truth (which he says is an inevitable) of the manifesto for the Noosphere, which is:
“I am one with the Earth
The Earth and my self are one mind.”
